Description

Diethylene Glycol (DEG) with chemical formula of (CH2CH2OH)2O, is one of the most well-known organic solvents in the industry. DEG’s molecular weight is higher than MEG. DEG is also less volatile than MEG; therefore, it is used in different applications compared to MEG.

Diethylene Glycol is soluble in water, alcohol, ether, acetone and Ethylene Glycol. Furthermore, DEG is miscible with water and organic solvents.; In other words, it can be dissolved in many conditions at various concentrations. DEG is combustible and toxic. It can react with Sulfuric Acid, Nitric Acid, Oxygen, Hydrogen Peroxide, perchloric acid and other strong acids.

Diethylene glycol is an organic compound that is colorless and odorless. It is a widely used solvent and is miscible in water, alcohol, ether, and ethylene glycol. It is also used as an antifreeze and in lubricants. The diethylene market is segmented by application, end-user industry, and geography. By application, the market is segmented into plasticizer, personal care, chemical intermediates, lubricant, and other applications), end-user industry (plastics, agrochemicals, cosmetic and personal care, paints and coatings.

DEG Markets in the World

The Asia-Pacific region has the largest share of the global market for DEG. This is mostly due to the high demand for this product in various industries such as automobiles, chemicals and construction. Main markets of DEG are India, China and South Korea.

Europe and North America are other important markets for Diethylene Glycol. Europe is DEG’s second largest market due to the significant demand the textile and automotive industries. Having a significant automotive market and high value of natural gas production, North America is pioneer to consume Diethylene Glycol in the natural gas industry.

Iran is both a user and producer of DEG on a big scale. PETRO ARSES Chemicals is Iranian supplier of DEG and other types of Glycol such as Monoethylene Glycol (MEG), Triethylene Glycol (TEG) and Drilling Glycol.

Key driving factors responsible for the rising growth of the market are the increasing demand in the construction industry and the paints and coatings industry in the emerging economies of India and China.

However, regulations restricting DEG use due to its toxic nature and volatile prices of raw materials are the major restraints of the market.

The rising demand for diethylene glycol as a chemical intermediate in the chemical industry due to increased downstream uses in PET resins and the textile industry are the major opportunities to drive the market in the future.

The Asia-Pacific region has dominated the market across the world and is going to be the fastest-growing market due to the rise in infrastructure development and rapid industrialization.

Packaging:

DEG is supplied in 230 kg drums and/or in IBCs (intermediate bulk containers). Tanks and barrels for storage of this material are made of metal or polyethylene as corrosion resistance is required. Although DEG is classified as a toxic and harmful substance, there are flexible regulations for its transportation by road, rail, air or sea.

Applications

This material is mostly used in paint, resin and gas industries. Many products, including saturated and unsaturated polyester resins and antifreeze, require DEG for production. Due to its many mentioned applications, DEG is better known as a solvent. Having high absorption capability, DEG plays an important and vital role in moisture-sensitive products.

Diethylene Glycol is widely used in various industries for different applications due to its superior properties. DEG is used directly in the production of polyester resins, polyunsaturated and unsaturated plasticizers and polyurethane foam as an intermediate. Moreover, mentioned polyester resins have various applications in daily consumables such as furniture, luggage, car and aircraft, fabrics, beverage bottles and etc. DEG is used for dehydration of natural and synthetic gases. Besides that, DEG is widely used to remove impurities from gases. DEG has magnificent properties as a solvent; therefore, it is used in cases such as separation of aromatics and paraffinic hydrocarbons. Other major applications of DEG are in producing of dyes, lubricants, cooking oils, hydraulic brake fluids, stamp inks, ballpoint pens and other organic compounds. Moreover, DEG is used in personal care products such as skin creams, lotions, cosmetics and deodorants. It is worth mentioning that Monoethylene Glycol antifreezes also contain a low percentage of Diethylene Glycol.

Diethylene glycol (DEG) is used in a wide range of industrial applications. Some of these include:

To produce tobacco and tobacco products (such as additives, humectants, and inks)

To produce artificial smoke/fog/mist

As an ingredient in fuel to warm foods and to heat enclosed spaces

In fire extinguishing sprinkler systems

To manufacture munitions

To produce deicers for use on roadways and sidewalks

As a component of heat transfer fluids in systems

On the basis of applications, the DEG market is divided into:

  • Antifreeze and Coolant
  • Solvents
  • Humectants
  • Polyester Resins and Plasticisers
  • Emulsifiers and Lubricants
  • Others

Usages

DEG is used in the manufacturing of saturated and unsaturated polyurethanes, polyester resins, and plasticizers. Diethylene Glycol is also used in organic synthesis as a building block. DEG is a solvent for nitrocellulose, resins, dyes, oils, and other organic compounds.

Safety tips

Diethylene Glycol should be stored in a ventilated and cool environment, away from heat and humidity. It is recommended to keep the Diethylene Glycol in stainless steel drums and under a neutral gas such as Nitrogen.

Handling:

  • Wash thoroughly after handling.
  • Use with adequate ventilation.
  • Avoid breathing vapors from heated material.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing.
  • Keep the container tightly closed.
  • Avoid breathing spray or mist.

Storage:

  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.
  • Keep containers tightly closed.
  • Store protected from moisture.

Hazards:

  • Eye: May cause mild eye irritation.
  • Skin: May cause mild skin irritation.
  • Ingestion: May cause liver and kidney damage.
  • Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation.
