Description

Description:

Tri ethylene Glycol, also known as TEG, is a colorless liquid alcohol with chemical formula of C6H14O4. TEG, is the third member of the dihydric alcohol series and is produced alongside Monoethylene Glycol (MEG)and Diethylene Glycol (DEG) as a by-product of the direct hydration reaction of ethylene oxide.

TEG is odorless and non-flammable. This product has a high viscosity and boiling point and is also soluble in water. TEG is preferably used in cases that require a higher boiling point and lower volatility than Diethylene Glycol. Tri ethylene Glycol is soluble in acetone, ethanol, acetic acid, glycerin, and aldehydes. It is slightly soluble in diethyl ether, and insoluble in oils and most hydrocarbons. Tri ethylene Glycol is considered slightly toxic but non-hazardous.

TEG Markets in the World

The consumption of TEG is driven by the size of a countries industry and therefore countries such as China, India and Russia are some of the highest consuming countries of TEG in the world. Given that Russia is one of the biggest gas producers in the world, it is has now become one of the new consumers of Ethylene Glycols. New gas fields in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iran also indicate that TEG consumption is high.

In addition to these companies, many regional and domestic manufacturers in the markets of countries such as China, India, South Korea and other countries are currently trying to gain a role in the sale market of Tri ethylene Glycol. Iran is also one of the producers of Tri ethylene Glycol which has succeeded in producing TEG 99% high purity.

Tri Ethylene Glycol (TEG) Market Analysis

The use of tri ethylene glycol (TEG) is rising across several industries and the cooling properties of tri ethylene glycol (TEG) help in completing various tasks. In recent times, the organic property of tri ethylene glycol (TEG) has a vital role in the growth of the tri ethylene glycol (TEG) market globally. The usage of ethylene tri ethylene glycol (TEG) in HVAC has creased several factors for the growth of the global tri ethylene glycol (TEG) market. Moreover, rising demand of oil and gas in several industries such as power generation and transportation will improve the overall market demand for tri ethylene glycol during the forecast period of 2022-2029.

Packaging:

Due to the fact that this compound is liquid at normal temperature, TEG chemical compound is supplied in 230 kg drums and/or in IBCs (intermediate bulk containers). Tanks and barrels for storage of this material are made of metal or polyethylene as corrosion resistance is required.

Production Method:

Tri ethylene glycol is prepared commercially as a co-product of the oxidation of ethylene at high temperature, in the presence of a silver oxide catalyst.  The ethylene oxide is then hydrated to yield mono, di, tri, and tetra ethylene glycols.

It is estimated that the total world consumption of TEG is in excess of 175 metric tonnes annually.

Applications

Applications

Tri ethylene Glycol is widely used in various industries for different applications due to its specific properties.

A brief of its applications is provided for a glance:

  • Oil and Gas Industry

The main uses for tri ethylene glycol are based upon its hygroscopic quality. This means that it can absorb moisture from the air through absorption or adsorption. It is used as a dehydrating agent for natural gas pipelines where it removes the water from the gas before being condensed. The tri ethylene glycol can then be continually reused, although the by-product of benzene needs to be disposed of carefully. This process is useful as it prevents the gas from freezing making the gas easier to transport and manage for end consumers.

  • Mild Disinfectant

Tri ethylene glycol can also be used as a mild disinfectant. Due to its low toxicity, antimicrobial properties, and low odour, it is commonly used for air disinfection in occupied areas where more aggressive disinfectants cannot be used. Due to these disinfectant properties and the dehydrating properties, it is an ideal dehumidifying agent in air-conditioning units.

  • Automotive industry

The rising demand for tri ethylene glycol (TEG) in the automotive industry is anticipated to increase the growth of the global market. Tri ethylene glycol (TEG) has a significantly lower melting point than water, which keeps and maintain engines from freezing in the winter and works as a coolant to avoid overheating in the summer. Also, ethylene tri ethylene glycol (TEG) is used in vehicles to absorb combustion heat which is expected to generate lucrative opportunities for the global tri ethylene glycol (TEG) market. Furthermore, augmented utilization in paints and coatings combined with use in aircraft de-icing fluid will create a surge in demand for tri ethylene glycol (TEG) and will increase valuable opportunities for the market’s growth rate.

  • Textile

Tri ethylene Glycol is commonly used as a dye in the textile industry.

  • Cosmetic Products

Chemical companies use TEG for production of cosmetics, conditioners, shampoos and etc.

  • Production of Resins

TEG is utilized as a reactant in the production of polyester resins, which is used in the production of various textile materials, packaging, car bodies and electrical items.

  • Solvent Applications

TEG is a very good solvent and is used in various fields such as detergents, printing inks, solvent inks.

  • Heat Transfer Fluids

TEG is industrial chemical for High-temperature applications such as geothermal plants, petrochemical reactors, hot fluid transferring pipelines, and solar systems which require efficient heat-transferring fluids. Safety tips

TEG is a stable and non-corrosive chemical with a high flash point. If the material is stored in high temperatures, the glycols will decompose; therefore, controlling the temperature of the storage environment is highly required. Gas production during the decomposition of this compound will cause high pressure in closed systems.

The storage of this particular compound should be a cool, dry place. It is usually recommended that the ambient temperature not exceed 49 ° C. The storage room of this material must be well ventilated. Barrels and storage tanks for Tri ethylene glycol should be kept away from moisture and flammable sources. The storage containers of this material are usually aluminum. In such storage conditions, TEG can be stored for two years.

TEG must be kept away from strong acids, strong oxidants and strong bases. Storing TEG near medicines, beverages and food sources is .not advised
